Chapter Six
I led Nora from the parking lot behind my apartment and around to the front door. She stopped and looked up into the cold, clear night sky. âThereâs Orion, always so easy to identify.â
âWhere?â I looked up to see what looked like a jumble of stars.
She pointed and explained the pattern of stars. âThat bright star is Betelgeuse and the other very bright one is Rigel.â
âNow I see them. I wish I knew more about the constellations. Maybe Iâll get a book.â
âI could teach you.â Nora turned to the door.
As I fumbled with my key, I realized her offer implied possible future time together.
We stomped the snow from our boots, removed them, and I took her coat to hang it in the front hall closet. In the living room I turned on the tree lights and she handed me the bag with two bottles of wine, then knelt down and placed a small gift-wrapped box under the tree.
âYour tree looks beautiful. â She looked up and smiled. âYou chose the best one in the lot.â
I happily remembered our first meeting in the lot when we looked at the tree together. âThanks,â was all I could think of to say. I took the wine to the kitchen, put it in the refrigerator, and returned to the living room. âIâll show you to your bedroom.â Nora followed me down the hall and I stood aside and motioned toward the room.
âI put clean towels on the bed for you. Thereâs an extra blanket there in case youâre cold tonight.â I awkwardly stood in the doorway and watched as she put her overnight bag on a chair. âI never have company stay here. This room was for my aunt. I used to bring her down from her small town and show her around Milwaukee.â I smiled at the memory. âShe liked visiting the art museum and eating in a Chinese restaurant.â
âWere you close to her?â
âShe brought me up. My parents died in a car accident when I was four.â
âHow good that you had her to take care of you.â Nora stood looking at me with that strange expression I couldnât identify.
âIâll let you get settled.â
I fled to the kitchen, removed the food from the refrigerator, and lit the candle. When I took a bottle of the wine Nora brought for us from the refrigerator, I dropped the corkscrew back in the drawer, relieved to see a screw-top bottle.
Nora came into the living room as I put on a CD. She wore black slacks and a soft wool lavender sweater that displayed her trim body and lovely breasts. The color made a beautiful contrast with her dark hair and dark expressive eyes, and I thought of the colors in the scarf under the tree.
I handed her a glass of wine.
âThank you, Erica.â She held it up in a brief toast, took a drink, and grinned. âI like your top.â
My black wool sweater had two white reindeer marching across the front. Sandy and Judy had given it to me last Christmas.
